UK voters pick favourite Queen and Freddie Mercury song in new national poll | Music | Entertainment

Queen continue to be the champions and will never stop, ahem, rocking us, so it’s no surprise to find some of their most bombastic anthems storming to the top of the new nationwide poll. However, there are also a plenty of ballads among them, including Freddie Mercury’s iconic song for his girlfriend Mary Austin, which was never a major single release at all. Rock legend Brian May shared his joy at the results of the new vote, counted down today on Radio 2.

The results were announced on the Zoe Ball show, following a two-week vote across the whole radio station.

After all the votes were counted, the top five countdown was bursting with stadium-filling epics including Radio Ga Ga in fifth, the double A-side We Are The Champions / We Will Rock You in fourth, Somebody to Love in third place and the sleeper hit Don’t Stop Me Now in second place. Of all their tracks, it is the one that has exploded in increasing popularity over the years.

Bohemian Rhapsody and those other anthems rightly deserve their places, but it is great to see three emotionally-charged ballads up there too.

At number 6 is Brian May’s own Who Wants To Live Forever was written for the Highlander soundtrack and included on Queen’s A Kind of Magic album.

Freddie’s tender track Love Of My Life sits at number 9. It has always been a live concert favourite and these days is touchingly performed by Brian on stage with his much-missed bandmate accompanying him on-screen. And just behind at number 10 is the heartbreaking These Are The Days Of Our Lives, written by Roger Taylor and recorded by Freddie in his final months.

Bohemian Rhapsody remains the UK’s third-biggest-selling single of all time and Radio 2’s Steve Wright added: “This is the real life, not just fantasy! The Radio 2 listeners have spoken and it’s clear that nothing can stop them now from loving Queen’s iconic hit Bohemian Rhapsody. I’m thrilled to crown this timeless hit the winner, proving that it still rocks the airwaves decades after its release.”

Incredibly, the 2009 version by The Muppets also makes the list at number 31, above classics like It’s A Hard Life, Too Much Love Will Kill You and Bicycle Race.
