The trick comes soon after TikTok users were warned about a viral hack of storing the fruit in water to prolong freshness.

The trick, which encourages people to submerge avocados in water to prevent browning, can allow listeria to permeate the fleshy pulp beneath the skin.

Carly Sedlacek, a registered dietitian, explained: “If you put your avocado in water, you’re really just dropping it into a breeding ground for any bacteria that are present.

“This TikTok hack is a recipe for foodborne illness. It’s very, very bad.”
