The Telegraph has reported that this year, “fashion is entering a blue period” and that many celebrities may be spotted wearing blue tones on the red carpet in the near future. However, the Royal Family has been seen wearing blue for years while attending event. Why is this colour so popular with royalty?

Princess Kate delighted royal fans last weekend when she attended the Easter Service at St George’s Chapel wearing a bright blue coat that matched her children’s outfits and Prince William’s suit.

Kate wore a dark blue coat by designer Catherine Walker with nude heels. According to Behavioural Color Psychologist Karen Haller, Kate, William and their children often wear blue to show themselves “coming together as a family, representing themselves as a cohesive unit.”

In an interview with MyLondon, the psychologist explained: “When it comes to colour psychology darker blues communicates you are in a position of authority, trustworthy, reliable and can be depended on. You have a sense of duty and take that seriously with committed focus.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla were also spotted matching the Wales’ family outfits, as Charles was wearing a dark navy suit with a pale pink shirt and Camilla wore a blue coat dress with light blue embroidery by designer Anna Valentine.

Camilla has often been seen in blue at royal events since it has been confirmed that her official royal title will be ‘Queen’ and not ‘Queen Consort’. Her Majesty wore a blue dress in the new official portrait of both Camilla and Charles that was taken by Hugo Burnand in the Blue Drawing Room of Buckingham Palace.

According to colour psychologist Lee Chambers, blue represents “authority”. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Chambers explained: “Blue carries a historical symbolism of nobility and status, and this still makes it a strong royal statement colour to this day.

“In addition, blue conveys that the wearer has a calm, reassured confidence, and its associations with trustworthiness and loyalty are qualities that Queen Camilla will be wanting to send as a message during this time.”

The colour blue may be a favourite colour of the Royal Family as it is associated with one of Britain’s most prestigious orders, which is why most senior members of the Royal Family can often be seen wearing a bright blue sash during formal ceremonies.

This is because certain people in the Royal Family are members are the Order of the Garter, which is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain. It was first established by King Edward III in 1348 who was inspired by the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

During Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, King Charles, Princess Anne and Prince William could be seen wearing the blue stash. Members of the Order of the Garter include King Charles, senior members of the Royal Family selected by the reigning monarch and 24 Knights chosen due to their work for Britain.

According to the Royal Family’s website, Knights of the Garter are “chosen personally by the Sovereign to honour those who have held public office, who have contributed in a particular way to national life or who have served the Sovereign personally.”
