Cold Weather Payments have activated for hundreds of thousands of people as the mercury plummets this week. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has triggered the payments for 211,000 ahead of a cold spell expected to bring hazardous conditions to much of the country.

National Severe Weather Warnings have outlined the risk of ice and “potentially disruptive” snow, with some snowy showers expected to produce up to 10cm in just a couple of days.

The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) expects the impact will primarily affect older Britons – those aged 65 and over – and people with pre-existing conditions.

Many of those feeling the worst of the conditions will have DWP payments to fall back on as the department opens up its cold weather scheme.

People living in hundreds of postcode areas in England and Wales will receive an extra £25 towards their bills after the payments triggered over the weekend.

Thousands of people have already received the sum since late 2023, and the latest decision on January 13 will mean that many others in additional regions can count on extra help this week.

Regions added on Saturday include Oxfordshire, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Norfolk, Staffordshire and Powys in Wales. The regions include 211 postcode areas, bringing the total number receiving £24.4 million worth of payments to 550.
