Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking over Netflix at the moment with his new documentary, Arnold, and his latest TV show, FUBAR.

In the former, he looked back on moments of his career where he explained how he felt throughout the vicious highs and lows of being a cinematic icon.

One emotional experience came in 1993 shortly after the release of his fantasy-parody movie Last Action Hero.

Although the whimsical picture has become a staple in Schwarzenegger’s repertoire over the years, it was not well received by fans or critics at all.

When the movie hit cinemas, it was a box office bomb, earning a meagre $15.3 million in the process. Schwarzenegger explained how “embarrassing” this performance was for him, especially after his career had been going from strength to strength over the past few years.

Schwarzenegger said: “I cannot tell you how upset I was. It hurts you. It hurts your feelings. It’s embarrassing.”

The 75-year-old added that he “didn’t want to see anyone for a week” – but he had to force himself to go on.

“You keep plodding along,” he said. “And my mother-in-law also said this all the time: ‘Let’s just move forward.’ It’s a great message.”

Schwarzenegger was even more devastated by the reaction to Last Action Hero considering his recent massive box office successes.

Two years prior, Arnie starred in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, a picture that was received so well it earned more than $520 million at the box office.

In the process, it became the highest-grossing movie of the year, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time (at the time).

Schwarzenegger confessed: “When Last Action Hero came out I had reached my peak after Terminator 2, having the most successful movie of the year worldwide,” before continuing to recall his fall from grace.

Despite Last Action Hero’s devastating cinematic arrival, Schwarzenegger’s career was not tarnished.

Just a year later, in 1994, he starred in True Lies, a mystery thriller which earned an enormous $378 million at the box office.
